Penguin hat

This is one of my latest creations. I actually saw a penguin hat on a kid who came through my cash at work, and I had to copy it.

I started with some asymmetric graph paper

Then I found a plain pattern that would work

though I did have to change it to knit on 2 needles for my sad attempt at intarsia. I used the 3-6 month size.

I figured out my gauge and how big I wanted my penguin face. Then came the hard part for me, drawing the penguin face on the graph paper. I'm still not happy with the results.

I was planning on making the nose out of felt and sewing it on, but my mom happened to have some sock weight yard the right color. We were worried that felt might come off, or not be very good to suck on. I picked up stitches in a circle around the point where I had planned to sew on the felt. I knit it in the round and decreased to get the pointy beak.

I'm still not extremely happy with the rolled brim, but it's still cute.
